Affected Teaching
James and John were looking forward to Jesus ruling in Jerusalem and despite the constant reminders by Jesus that He was going to Jerusalem to be crucified, their mother requested that one sit on his right and one sit on his left. Jesus told her that she does not realize what she is asking because those positions are given to someone by the Father. Jesus asks them if they were able to drink of the cup He was going to drink and the baptism which he was going to undertake. In their quickness to reply, they told Jesus that they are able. In verse 23, Jesus goes on to tell them that they will drink of the cup and will be baptized with His baptism. (John 18:11 MLV) Therefore Jesus said to Peter, Put your sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it? The cup which the Father gave Him was to be crucified and pay for the sins of all who would become Christians.
