Gospel According to Matthew (MLV)
Matthew 20)
20:1 For* the kingdom of heaven is similar to a man who was a householder, who went out at the same time as the dawn to hire workers into his vineyard. 20:2 And when he had agreed with the workers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 20:3 And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the marketplace; 20:4 and he said to them, You* also go into the vineyard and whatever is just I will give you*. And they went their way. 20:5 Again having went out about the sixth and the ninth hour and he did likewise. 20:6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing idle; and he says to them, Why do you* stand here idle all day?
20:7 They say to him, Because no one has hired us.
He says to them, You* also go into the vineyard and whatever is just I will give you*. 20:8 And when it became evening, the lord of the vineyard says to his commissioner, Call the workers and render to them their wages, beginning from the last to the first. 20:9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they each received a denarius. 20:10 And when the first came, they supposed that they will receive more; but they themselves also received a denarius each.
20:11 And when they received it, they murmured against the householder, 20:12 saying, These last ones have done only one hour of work and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.
20:13 But he answered and said to one of them, Friend, I do you no wrong: did you not agree with me for a denarius? 20:14 Take up what is yours and go your way; it is my will to give to this last one, as I did also to you*. 20:15 Or is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good? 20:16 So the last will be first and the first last; for* many are invited but few are chosen.
20:17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples privately and on the way he said to them, 20:18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the high-priests and scribes; and they will condemn him to death, 20:19 and will deliver him to the Gentiles who are going to mock and to scourge and to crucify him and the third day he will rise again.
20:20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons came to him, worshiping him and asking a certain thing of him. 20:21 And he said to her, What do you wish?
She says to him, Command that these, my two sons, may sit, one on your right hand and one on your left hand, in your kingdom.
20:22 But Jesus answered and said, You* do not know what you* ask. Are you* able to drink the cup which I am about to drink and to be immersed* with the immersion* which I am to be immersed* with ?
They say to him, We are able.
20:23 And he says to them, My cup indeed you* will drink and you* will be immersed* with the immersion* which I am immersed* with : but to sit on my right hand and on my left hand, is not mine to give; but it is for them for whom it has been prepared by my Father. 20:24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant concerning the two brothers.
20:25 But Jesus called them to him and said, You* know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them and their great ones exercise authority over them. 20:26 But it will not be so among you*: but whoever wishes to become great among you*, he will be your* SERVANT; 20:27 and whoever wishes to be first among you*, let him be your* bondservant: 20:28 just-as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life a redemption for many.
20:29 And as they went out from Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 20:30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, Lord, son of David, have mercy on us. 20:31 And the crowd rebuked them, that they should be silent: but they cried out even greater, saying, Lord, son of David, have mercy on us.
20:32 And Jesus stood still and called them and said, What do you* will that I might do to you*?
20:33 They say to him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. 20:34 And Jesus, being moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes received their sight and they followed him.
