Gospel According to Matthew (MLV)
Matthew 13)
13:1 And in that day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea side. 13:2 And great crowds were gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat and sat; and all the crowd stood on the beach. 13:3 And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went forth to sow; 13:4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side and the birds came and devoured them. 13:5 And others fell upon the rocky areas, where they did not have much earth and immediately they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth: 13:6 and when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 13:7 And others fell upon the thorns; and the thorns shot up and choked them. 13:8 And others fell upon the good ground and gave fruit, some a hundred times, some sixty, some thirty. 13:9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
13:10 And the disciples came and said to him, Why do you speak to them in parables?
13:11 And he answered and said to them, It is given to you* to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 13:12 For* whoever has, to him will be given and he will have abundance: but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13:13 Because of this, I speak to them in parables; because seeing, they do not see and hearing, they do not hear, nor do they understand. 13:14 And in them the prophesy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says, 'By hearing you* will hear and will by no means understand; and seeing you* will see and will by no means perceive: 13:15 For* this people's heart has become callous and with the ears they have heard with difficulty and they have closed their eyes; lest they should perceive with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should turn again and I should heal them.' {Is. 6.9f} 13:16 But your* eyes are blessed, because they see; and your* ears, because they hear. 13:17 For* truly I say to you* , that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you* see and did not see them; and to hear what you* hear and did not hear them. 13:18 You* hear then the parable of the sower. 13:19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understands it, then the Evil One comes and snatches what has been sown in his heart. This is he who was sown by the way side. 13:20 And he who was sown upon the rocky areas, this is he who hears the word and immediately with joy receives it; 13:21 yet he does not have root in himself, but is temporary; and when tribulation or persecution happens because of the word, immediately he stumbles. 13:22 And he who was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word; and the care of this world and the deception of riches, choke the word and he becomes unfruitful. 13:23 And he who was sown upon the good ground, this is he who hears the word and understands it; who truly bears fruit and produces some a hundred times, some sixty, some thirty.
13:24 He placed another parable before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is similar to a man who sowed good seed in his field: 13:25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel also among the wheat and went away. 13:26 But when the blade had spouted and produced fruit, then the darnel appeared also. 13:27 And the bondservants of the householder came and said to him, Lord, did you not sow good seed in your field? Then from where has the darnel come ? 13:28 And he said to them, A man, an enemy, did this. And the bondservants say to him, Then do you WILL, that we go and gather them up? 13:29 But he said, No; lest while gathering up the darnel, you* uproot the wheat at the same time with them. 13:30 Allow both to grow together until the harvest and I will say to the reapers in the time of the harvest , Gather up first the darnel and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.
13:31 He placed another parable before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is similar to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field: 13:32 which indeed is less than all seeds; but when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree, so-that the birds of the heaven come and nest in the branches of it.
13:33 He spoke another parable to them; The kingdom of heaven is similar to leaven, which a woman took and mixed in three peck and a half containers of flour, until it was all leavened.
13:34 Jesus spoke all these things in parables to the crowds; and without a parable he did not speak to them: 13:35 that it might be fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet, saying, 'I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.' {Ps. 78.2}
13:36 Then Jesus left the crowds and went into the house and his disciples came to him, saying, Explain to us the parable of the darnel of the field.
13:37 And he answered and said to them, He who is sowing the good seed is the Son of Man; 13:38 and the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the darnel are the sons of the Evil One; 13:39 and the enemy that sowed them is the devil and the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are angels. 13:40 As therefore the darnel are gathered up and burned with fire; so it will be in the end of the world. 13:41 The Son of Man will send forth his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all the offenses and those who practice lawlessness, 13:42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire: the weeping and the gnashing of teeth will be there. 13:43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
13:44 Again the kingdom of heaven is similar to a treasure hidden in the field; which a man found and hid; and in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
13:45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is similar to a man who is a merchant seeking goodly pearls: 13:46 who having found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
13:47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is similar to a drag-net, that was cast into the sea and gathered fish of every kind: 13:48 which, when it was filled, they, having drawn it up upon the beach; and having sat down, gathered the good into vessels, but they cast the rotten outside. 13:49 So it will be in the end of the world: the angels will go out and separate the evil from among the righteous, 13:50 and will cast them into the furnace of fire: the weeping and the gnashing of teeth will be there.
13:51 And Jesus says to them, Have you* understood all these things?
They say to him, Yes, Lord.
13:52 And he said to them, Therefore every scribe who has been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is similar to a man who is a householder, who cast forth out of his treasure things new and old.
13:53 And it happened, when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed there.
13:54 And coming into his home land, he taught them in their synagogue, so-that they were astounded and said, From where does this man get this wisdom and these miracles? 13:55 Is this not the carpenter's son? Is his mother not called Mary? And his brethren, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 13:56 And are they not all his sisters with us? Then from where did this man get all these things? 13:57 And they were offended by him.
But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his homeland and in his own house. 13:58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.
