Gospel According to Luke (MLV)
Luke 5)
5:1 Now it happened, while the crowd jammed against him to hear the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; 5:2 and he saw two boats standing by the lake: but the fishermen had gone out of them and were rinsing their nets. 5:3 And he entered into one of the boats, which was Simon's and asked him to sail out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the crowds out of the boat. 5:4 And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, Sail out into the deep and let down your* nets for a catch.
5:5 And Simon answered and said, Master, we labored all night and took nothing: but at your word I will let down the nets. 5:6 And when they had done this, they shut up a great crowd of fish; and their nets were breaking; 5:7 and they beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and take some of them. And they came and filled both the boats, so-that they began to sink. 5:8 But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; because I am a sinful man, O Lord. 5:9 For* amazement encircled him and all those with him, at the catch of the fish which they had taken; 5:10 and similarly also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not fear; hereafter you will be capturing men. 5:11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left all and followed him.
5:12 And it happened, while he was in one of the cities, behold, a man full of leprosy and seeing Jesus and falling upon his face, he begged him, saying, Lord, if you WILL, you can make me clean. 5:13 And he stretched forth his hand and touched him, saying, I WILL; be made clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. 5:14 And he commanded him to tell no one: but go your way and show yourself to the priest and offer concerning your cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. {Lev. 13:49 and 14.2ff} 5:15 But the word concerning him went abroad even more and great crowds came together to hear and to be healed by him of their sicknesses. 5:16 But he retired by himself in the deserted places and prayed.
5:17 And it happened on one of those days, that he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every village of Galilee and Judaea and Jerusalem and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. 5:18 And behold, men bring a man who was palsied on a cot and they sought to bring him in and to lay him before him. 5:19 And not finding by what way they might bring him in because of the crowd, they went up to the housetop and let him down through the tiles with his cot into the midst before Jesus. 5:20 And seeing their faith, he said, Man, your sins are forgiven you*.
5:21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this who is speaking blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, except God only?
5:22 But Jesus knowing their reasonings, answered and said to them, What do you* reason in your* hearts? 5:23 Which is easier, to say, Your sins are forgiven you; or to say, Arise and walk? 5:24 But that you* may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins (he said to him who was palsied), I say to you, Arise and take up your cot and go to your house. 5:25 And instantly he rose up before them and took up that on which he was lying and departed to his house, glorifying God. 5:26 And astonishment took hold on all and they glorified God; and they were filled with fear, saying, We have seen glorious things today.
5:27 And after these things he went forth and beheld a tax-collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax-office and said to him, Follow me. 5:28 And he forsook all and rose up and followed him.
5:29 And Levi made him a great banquet in his house and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and of others that were reclining at the meal with them. 5:30 And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured to his disciples, saying, Why do you* eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?
5:31 And Jesus answering said to them, Those who are healthy have no need of a physician; but those who are ill. 5:32 I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.
5:33 And they said to him, The disciples of John fast often and make supplications; similarly also the disciples of the Pharisees; but yours eat and drink.
5:34 And Jesus said to them, <9>The sons of the bride-chamber are not able to fast, while the bridegroom is with them, are they? 5:35 But the days will come; and when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, then they will fast in those days. 5:36 And he spoke also a parable to them: No one puts a piece from a new garment upon an old garment; or else it will tear-apart the new and also the piece from the new will not agree with the old. 5:37 And no one puts new wine into old wine-skins; or else the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled and the skins will perish. 5:38 But new wine is to be put into fresh wine-skins. 5:39 And no one having drunk old wine wishes for new; for* he says, The old is good.
<9> 5:34- that* IS: companions of the bridegroom.
