Gospel According to John (MLV)
John 6)
6:1 After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. 6:2 And a great crowd followed him, because they beheld the signs which he did on those who were sick. 6:3 And Jesus went up into the mountain and there he sat with his disciples. 6:4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 6:5 Jesus then having lifted up his eyes and having seen that a great crowd is coming to him, says to Philip, Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat? 6:6 And he said this to test him: for* he himself knew what he was about to do.
6:7 Philip answered him, Two hundred denarii's worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. 6:8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, says to him, 6:9 There is a lad here, who has five barley loaves and two fish: but what are these among so many?
6:10 Jesus said, Make the people recline for a meal. Now much grass was in the place. So the men reclined, in number about five thousand. 6:11 Jesus therefore took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to those who had sat down; similarly also of the fish as much as they would eat. 6:12 And when they were filled, he says to his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces which was left-over, that nothing be lost. 6:13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which remained over of those who had eaten. 6:14 When therefore the people saw the sign which he did, they said, This truly is the prophet who is coming into the world.
6:15 Therefore Jesus knowing that they were about to come and sieze him, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain by himself alone.
6:16 And when it became evening, his disciples went down to the sea; 6:17 and they entered into a boat and were going over the sea to Capernaum. And it had already become dark and Jesus had not yet come to them. 6:18 And the sea was rising by reason of a great blowing wind. 6:19 When therefore they had rowed about twenty five or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat and they were afraid. 6:20 But he says to them, It is I; do not be afraid. 6:21 Therefore they were willing to receive him into the boat and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
6:22 On the next day the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except one and that Jesus did not enter with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples went away alone 6:23 (but yet boats came from Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks): 6:24 when the crowd therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 6:25 And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, Rabbi, when did you come here?
6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Truly, truly, I say to you*, You* seek me, not because you* saw signs, but because you* ate of the loaves and were filled. 6:27 Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which abides to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you*: for* him the Father, even God, has sealed.
6:28 They said therefore to him, What should we do, that we may work the works of God?
6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that you* believe in him whom he has sent.
6:30 They said therefore to him, What then do you do for a sign, that we may see and believe you? What work will you do? 6:31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it has been written, He gave them bread out of heaven to eat. {Ex. 16:21, Num. 11:8}
6:32 Jesus therefore said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you*, It was not Moses that gave you* the bread out of heaven; but my Father gives you* the true bread out of heaven. 6:33 For* the bread of God is what comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.
6:34 They said therefore to him, Lord, give us always this bread.
6:35 Jesus said to them. I am the bread of life: he who is coming to me will not hunger and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 6:36 But I said to you*, That you* have seen me and yet do not believe, 6:37 All what the Father gives me will come to me; and him who is coming to me I will by no means cast outside. 6:38 Because I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 6:39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that of all that he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up in the last day. 6:40 And this is the will of my Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up in the last day.
6:41 Then the Jews murmured concerning him, because he said, I am the bread which came down out of heaven. 6:42 And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, I have come down out of heaven?
6:43 Jesus answered and said to them, Do not murmur among yourselves. 6:44 No one can come to me, except the Father who sent me draws him and I will raise him up in the last day. 6:45 It has been written in the prophets, 'And they will all be taught by God. {Is. 54:13} Everyone who has heard from the Father and has learned, comes to me. 6:46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God, he has seen the Father. 6:47 Truly, truly, I say to you*, He who believes has eternal life. 6:48 I am the bread of life. 6:49 Your* fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died. 6:50 This is the bread which is coming down out of heaven, that a man may eat of it and not die. 6:51 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if anyone eats from this bread, he will live forever: yes and the bread which I will give is my flesh, on behalf of the life of the world.
6:52 Therefore the Jews quarreled with one another, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 6:53 Jesus therefore said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you*, Unless you* eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you* do not have life in yourselves. 6:54 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up in the last day. 6:55 For* my flesh is indeed true food and my blood is indeed true drink. 6:56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him. 6:57 As the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father; so he who eats me, he also will live because of me. 6:58 This is the bread which came down out of heaven: not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever. 6:59 He said in the synagogue these things, as he taught in Capernaum.
6:60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they heard this, said, This is a hard saying; who can hear it?
6:61 But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured concerning this, said to them, Does this offend you*? 6:62 What then if you* should behold the Son of Man ascending where he was before? 6:63 It is the spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I have spoken to you* are spirit, are life. 6:64 But there are some of you* who do not believe. For* Jesus knew from the beginning who they are who do not believe and who is he who will deliver him to the Jews. 6:65 And he said, Because of this, I have said to you*, that no one is able to come to me, unless it be given to him from the Father.
6:66 Upon this many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him. 6:67 Jesus said therefore to the twelve, You* will not go away also, will you*?
6:68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. 6:69 And we have believed and know that you are the Holy One of God.
6:70 Jesus answered them, Did I not choose you* the twelve and one of you* is a devil? 6:71 Now he spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, one of the twelve, for* he was about to deliver him up to the Jews.
