“THEN COMETH THE DEVIL" Lu. 8:12 

Introduction: Some are apt to think of the devil as being an imaginary being and not one that really exists. Jesus declares him to be an active being. 

I. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DEVIL 

1. Powerful. Eph. 2:2; 6:12  2. Subtle. Gen. 3:1,2;2 Cor. 11:3  3. Liar. John 8:44  4. Deceitful. 2 Cor..;I:14  5. Cowardly. James 4:7  6. Alert. I Pet. 5:8 II. WHEN DOES HE USUALLY SHOW HIMSELF?  1. When children of God are happy. Gen. 3:1 He can't stand to see a happy congregation!  2. When the "Sons of God" assembler Job 1:6. Often sneaks into the assembly of saints!  3. When we are weak, weary, or troubled at heart. Has made many a drunkard by telling man to "drown his troubles."  4. When we are anxious for easy money. Matt. 26:14-16. Causes church members to work on Lord's day because they have been promised double-pay for Sunday work. 1 Tim. 6:10  5. When we plan our contribution. 2 Cor. 9:7. Ananias and Sapphira. Acts 5  6. When the word of God is preached. Lu. 8:12. Causes procrastination, disregard, rebellion  III. WHAT SHALL WE DO ABOUT IT?  1. Be on the alert for his presence. 2 Cor. 11:3  2. Resist him. James 4:7;1 Pet. 5:9  3. Watch and pray. Matt. 26:41
