Question:
I used to be a member of the church of Christ several years ago but fell away. I recently have been wanting to consider coming back. I have been pondering how I'm living my life lately and all the things I'm doing that are un-Christ-like. I have been thinking about television shows and which ones are okay to watch if your a member of the church. One of my favorite shows was overall a good family show but I have noticed in a couple of the episodes the Lord's name is taken in vain. It is not a common thing with this show but every once in a while it happens. I love this show. What should I do? Should I get one of those DVD players that bleep out certain words or just mute when I know they are about to say a certain word? I don't approve when they take the Lord's name in vain, but over all they are good shows.
Answer:
Isn't it interesting how Satan gets us to compromise on what we know is wrong? Because we know that 99% of something is good, then we accept the 1% that's bad. Come to think of it, isn't that how mouse poison works?
We don't watch much television in my household. It just doesn't interest any of us anymore, but we do have the old TV Guardian and a ClearPlay DVD player to keep the trash out of the house on the rare occasions when a movie or event is watched. I guess we approach it differently. We set the standard first, and then only participate in those things which meet our standard of living.
Before I let you go, I would like you to see something about yourself. You want to go back to being a Christian, but you are waiting to first become perfect and then you might consider going. Isn't that backwards? The church is there to help people become better people, not to help perfect people coast into heaven.
Wouldn't it be better to join with other people struggling against sin, to be encouraged and to be an encouragement? Fighting sin on your own is not a recipe for success.
