Back to Basics:
THE EPISTLES - CHRIST'S MESSAGES TO HIS CHURCHES

INTRODUCTION: Many of us have answering machines hooked up to our phones. Sometimes they will record junk. They can be aggravating. But sometimes they record important messages. Well, God has left Christians some messages that will help up be more faithful and grow spiritually. They are the epistles of the New Testament.

BODY

I. THE APOSTLES AND OTHER INSPIRED MEN WERE LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT TO WRITE INSPIRED MESSAGES TO GOD'S PEOPLE.

A. The Apostles were promised a special leading of the Holy Spirit.
1. Matthew 10:19 - "But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak;

2. Luke 21:15 - "for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.

B. They claimed this special guidance in their writings.
1. 1 Corinthians 2:12_13 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. "13" These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

2. 1 Corinthians 14:37 - If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

3. 2 Peter 3:1_2 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), "2" that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,

4. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

II. WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THESE LETTERS FROM INSPIRED MEN?
A. To build up the church and bring it to maturity.
1. Ephesians 4:11-17

2. Colossians 2:6_7 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, "7" rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

3. Titus 1:5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you;

B. To deal with certain questions that brethren wrote asking them about.
1. 1 Corinthians 7:1 Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
C. To warn about the possibility of apostasy.
1. 1 Timothy 4:1_3 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, "2" speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, "3" forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

2. Hebrews 3:12 - Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

3. 2 Peter 3:17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;

4. These letter were sent to keep churches from entering error and to get them to stand for the truth!

5. Jude 3

CONCLUSION: The words that the Inspired writers of the Epistles were intended for more than their generation, the were intended for Christian to be able to read and understand the truth of God's will. "For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles; "2" if indeed you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you, "3" how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, "4" by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), "5" which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets" (Ephesians 3:1-5).
