THE BOOK OF PHILIPPIANS CHAPTER 1 

I. THE INTRODUCTION OF THE LETTER: 1-2 

A. This letter was from two great Christians: Paul and Timotheus. v 1  B. This letter came with the greatest credentials: Paul and Timotheus being the servants of Christ v 1  C. This letter was to the greatest people on earth: The saints. v 1  D. This letter desired a great blessing: Peace. v 2  E. This letter was from the greatest source: God and Christ. v 2 II. PAUL'S PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH AT PHILIPPI: VS 3-11  A. These were the motivations of his prayer. vs 3-5  1. Paul had a happy remembrances of them. vs 3-4  2. Paul had enjoyed their fellowship in the gospel. v 5  B. These were the confidences of his prayer. v 6  1. Paul believed that God would work for them. Phi. 2:13, Romans 8:28  2. Paul believed that the Lord would help them. Matt. 28:20, Heb. 13:5-6  C. These were the reasons for his prayer. vs 7-8  1. Paul remembered their love. v 7  2. Paul had a great love for them. v 8  D. These were the requests of his prayer. vs 9-11  1. Paul prayed that their love would be increased. v 9, 1 John 5:3  2. Paul prayed that they would be blameless. v 10, Luke 23:34  5. Paul prayed that they would be filled with the fruit of righteousness. v 11, John 15:1-5 III THE LIFE OF PAUL: VS 12-26  A. This was the value of his life. vs 12-13  1. Paul was often persecuted because his persecutions helped to spread the gospel of Christ. vs 12-13, 2 Cor. 11:23-28  2. Our persecutions should help us to spread the gospel of Christ. 2 Tim. 3:12, Acts 8:1  B. This was the greatness of his life. v 4  1. Paul's life was an encouragement to other Christians.  2. Our life should be an encouragement to other Christians. Gal. 6:1-2  C. This was the motivation of his life vs 15-18  1. The power of the truth motivated his life. vs 15-18, Romans 1:16  2. The power of the truth should motivate our life. Heb. 4:12, Jer. 23:29  D. This was the purpose of his life. vs 19-20  1. Paul wanted to live for Christ. vs 19-20  2. Christians should desire to live for Christ. Gal. 2:20  E. These were the reasons why he was successful in life. vs 21-26  1. Paul believed that if he lived he would live for the Lord. Romans 14:7-9, Heb. 13:5-6  2. Paul believed that if he died he would did unto the Lord. Romans 14:7-9, Psa. 23:1-6 IV. THE STEADFASTNESS OF A CHRISTIAN: VS 27-30  A. There are the needs for our being steadfast. v 27  1. Our manner of life should be worthy of the gospel of Christ. Matt. 5:16  2. Christians must follow the examples of Christ. 1 Peter 2:21  B. These are the essentials for our being steadfast. 27  1. Christians should be united in Christ. 1 Cor. 1:10  2. Saints need to contend for the faith. Jude 3-4  C. These are the achievements for our being steadfast. v 28  1. Disciples must believe in God. Romans 8:31  2. Christians must trust in God. Heb. 13:5-6  D. These are the reasons for our being steadfast. vs 29-30  1. Christians must suffer for Christ. v 29, Romans 8:16-18  2. Saints must overcome the conflicts of life. v 30, 1 Peter 5:10 CHAPTER 2 

I. LIVING IN HARMONY: VS 1-4 

A. There are the appeals for our living in harmony. v 1  1. Our living in harmony is based on the consolation in Christ. John 14:1-3, Heb. 4:15-16  2. Our living in harmony is founded on the comfort of love. John 3:16, Romans 15:1-3  3. Our living in harmony is established on the fellowship of the Spirit. Acts 2:38, Romans 8:26  4. Our living in harmony is predicated on human mercy. Romans 12:15  B. These are the essentials for our living in harmony. v 2  1. Disciples must be of the same mind. 1 Peter 3:8, 1 Cor. 14:40  2. Christians should have the same love for one another. Romans 12:9, Matt. 5:43-48, James 2:1-4  3. Saints need to have the same purposes in life. 1 Cor. 1:10  C. These are the achievements for our living in harmony. v 2-4  1. Our living in harmony is achieved by humility. v 3, Romans 12:3  2. Our living in harmony is obtained by self-sacrifices. v 4, Romans 14:19 II. FOLLOWING JESUS: VS 5-11  A. These are the reasons for following Jesus. v 5  1. Jesus set the examples for service. John 13:12-17  2. Jesus left us an example that we should follow. 1 Peter 2:21  B. These are the requirements for following Jesus. vs 6-8  1. Saints must follow His examples of submission. vs 6-7, Luke 22:39-42  2. Disciples need to follow His examples of humility. v 8, Matt. 11:28-30, Prov. 6:17  3. Christians should follow His examples of obedience. v 8, Heb. 5:8-9  C. These are the effects of following Jesus. vs 9-11  1. Christians would be serving an exalted Savior. v 9, Rev. 1:18  2. Disciples would be acknowledging His Divine Authority. v 10, Matt. 28:18, Romans 14:11  3. Saints would be confessing His Lordship. v 11, Acts 2:36, Rev. 6:14-17 III. THE WORK OF SALVATION: VS 12-18  A. There are the needs for the work of salvation. v 12  1. The work of salvation would be the saving of lost souls. James 5:19-20  2. The work of salvation would be the saving of our own souls Romans 6:23  B. These are the ways to achieve the work of salvation. v 13  1. God works in us to do His will. 2 Peter 3:9  2. God does work for our own good. Romans 8:28  C. These are the requirements for the work of salvation. v 14  1. Christians must work without murmuring. 1 Tim. 6:6-8  2. Saints should labor without disputing. Gal. 5:15  D. These are the reasons for the work of salvation. v 15  1. The work of salvation would make us to be blameless. Col. 1:21-22  2. The work of salvation would make us to be lights in the world. Romans 13:12  E. These are the effects of the work of salvation. vs 16-18  1. The work of salvation would cause us to grow spiritually. v 16, 1 Peter 3:18  2. The work of salvation would cause us to have spiritual joy. vs 17-18, Phil. 4:4 IV. THE EXAMPLE OF TIMOTHY: VS 19-24  A. These were the characteristics of Timothy vs 19-20  1. Timothy was willing to go. v 19, Isa. 6:8  2. Timothy was ready to serve. v 20, Matt. 4:10  B. These were the reasons why Timothy was successful. vs 21-22  1. Timothy was putting the Lord first. v 21, Matt. 6:33  2. Timothy had proven himself. v 22, 2 Cor. 13:5  C. These were the works of Timothy. vs 23-24  1. Timothy was willing to work with the church. v 24, 2 John 9  2. Timothy was ready to work with Paul. v 24, 1 Cor. 3:9 V. THE EXAMPLE OF EPAPHRODITUS: VS 25-30  A. These were the traits of his life. v 25  1. Epaphroditus was a brother with Paul. Gal. 3:26-29  2. Epaphroditus was a labor with Paul. 2 Cor. 6:1  3. Epaphroditus was a fellow soldier with Paul. 2 Cor. 10:4-5  B. These were the characteristics of his life. v 26  1. Epaphroditus did not think too highly of himself. Romans 12:3  2. Epaphroditus loved the brotherhood. 1 Peter 2:22  C. These were the hardships of his life. v 26  1. Epaphroditus had sorrows. v 26, Job 14:1-2  2. Epaphroditus was sick. v 26  D. This was the success of his life. v 27  1. The mercy of God made him to be successful in life.  2. The mercy of God will make us to be successful in life. Titus 3:5  E. These were the motivations of his life.  1. Epaphroditus was willing to serve other people. vs 28-29, Gal. 6:1-2  2. Epaphroditus was ready to serve the Lord. v 30, Isa. 55:6 CHAPTER 3 

I. THE TRUE CHRISTIAN: VS 1-3 

A. This is the motivation of his life. v 1 (A true Christian rejoices in the Lord.) 1 Peter 1:8  B. These are the securities of his life. v 1  1. The word of God has converted his soul. 1 Peter 22-25  2. The word of God is increasing his faith. Romans 10:17, 2 Peter 1:3-4  3. The word of God is sustaining his life. Acts 30:32  C. These are the essentials of his life. v 2  1. A true Christian must beware of dogs because those worker have back biting ways. v 7, Matt. 7:6  2. A true disciple should be beware of evil workers because those persons are motivated by deceitful errors. v 2, 2 Tim. 3:13, 2 Thess. 2:9-12  3. A true saint needs to be beware of the concision because those workers are deceived with appealing error. v 2, 2 Tim. 4:3-4  D. These are the causes of his life. v 3  1. A true Christian has true circumcision. v 2, Romans 2:28-29  2. A true saint has been baptized into Christ. Romans 6:3-6  E. These are the characteristics of his life. v 3  1. A true Christian worshipers God in the Spirit. v 3, John 4:24  2. A true disciple rejoices in Christ Jesus. v 3, Phil. 4:4  3. A true saint does not trust in the flesh. v 3, Romans 8:12-13 II. THE EXAMPLE OF PAUL: VS 4-14  A. These were the reasons why Paul was successful life. v 4-7  1. Paul gave up Judaism. vs 4-6, Romans 10:1-3  2. Paul gained Christianity. v 7, John 14:6  B. These were the purposes of his life. vs 8-12  1. Paul wanted to win Christ. v 8, Rev. 1:18  2. Paul desired true righteousness. v 9, Matt. 5:20  3. Paul craved the blessings of Christ. v 10, Eph. 1:3  4. Paul longed for the blessings of the resurrection. vs 11-12, John 5:28-29  C. These were the securities of his life. vs 13-14  1. Paul forgot about his past hardships. v 13, 2 Cor. 11:22-28  2. Paul look to the future for his blessings. v 14, Heb. 12:1-2 III. THE WALK OF A CHRISTIAN: VS 15-21  A. These are the essentials for that walk. vs 15-16  1. Disciples must strive for their own perfection. v 15, Heb. 6:1  2. Christians must strive for their own Divine Acceptance. v 16, Rev. 2:26-27  B. These are the achievements of that walk. v 17  1. The Christian walk is achieved by following the godly example of other Christians. 1 Cor. 11:3  2. The Christian walk is obtained by walking in a godly manner. Titus 2:11- 12  C. These are the reasons for that walk. vs 18-20  1. Some people have earthly vision because they are the enemies of the cross of Christ. vs 18-19  2. The Christian has heavenly vision because he is look for his Spiritual inheritance. v 20, Heb. 12:1-3, Col. 3:1-4  D. These are the affects of that walk. v 21  1. Immortality is the greatest longing which a person has in life. 2 Cor. 5:1-4  2. Immortality is the greatest need for a person. 1 Cor. 15:50-55  3. Immortality is the greatest promise to a person. Romans 2:7  4. Immortality is the greatest life which a person can possess. 2 Tim. 1:10, 1 Tim. 6:15-16 CHAPTER 4 

I. BEING FAITHFUL UNTO THE LORD: VS 1-3 

A. These are the appeals for that faithfulness. v 1  1. Being faithful unto the Lord is based upon brotherly love. 1 Peter 1:22  2. Being faithful unto the Lord is founded upon the joy of a Christian. 2 John 2-3  B. These are the essentials for that faithfulness. v 1  1. A disciple must stand fast in the Lord's work. 1 Cor. 15:58  2. A Christian needs to remain faithful in the Lord's work. Rev. 2:10  C. These are the achievements for that faithfulness. vs 2-3  1. Being faithful unto the Lord is achieved by disciples being united in the Lord. v 2, 1 Cor. 1:10  2. Being faithful unto the Lord is obtained by working in cooperation with one another. v 3, Romans 14:19, 1 Cor. 3:9  D. These are the rewards for that faithfulness. v 3  1. Our names in being a saint will be written in heaven. Luke 10:20, Rev. 21:27, Heb. 12:23  2. Our names in being a disciple will not be erased from the Lamb's Book of life. Rev. 3:5, Rev. 20:12 II. GODLY LIVING: VS 4-7  A. These are the essentials for that godly life. vs 4-5  1. Disciples must rejoice in their services to the Lord. v 4, Psa. 37:3-5, 121:1  2. Christians should manifest an unselfish attitude toward their fellow man. v 5, Gal. 6:10, Romans 15:1-3  B. These are the achievements of that godly life. v 6  1. Godly living is achieved by prayer. 2 Peter 5:7  2. Godly living is obtained by believing in the power of prayer. James 5:16 3. Godly living is gained by continuing in prayer. Luke 18:1-8  C. These are the effects of that godly life. v 7  1. Godly living brings the peace of God to a troubled heart. John 14:27  2. Godly living engenders the providence of God to the weary Christian. Romans 8:28, Phil. 4:13 III. GODLY THOUGHTS: VS 8-9  A. These are the essentials for those godly thoughts. v 8  1. A Christian must mediate upon the truth of God. v 8, Psa. 1:1-3, 2 Tim. 2:15  2. A saint should think about those things which are honest. Job 1:6-12  3. A disciple ought to ponder those things which would be just. Matt. 7:12  4. A Christian needs to consider those things which are pure. Matt. 5:8  5. A saint should reflect upon those things which are lovely. Ruth 1:16- 17  6. A disciple must recall those things which are of a good report. 1 Sam. 4:15-18  B. These are the appeals for those godly thoughts. v 8  1. Having godly thoughts is based upon virtue. Prov. 23:7  2. Having godly thoughts is grounded upon praises. Psa. 84:10  C. These are the effects of those godly thoughts. v 9  1. Godly thoughts brings total obedience. v 9, 2 Peter 2:9  2. Godly thoughts receives peace form God. v 9, Phil 4:7 IV. OUR VICTORY OVER ANXIETY: VS 10-13  A. These are the essentials for that victory. vs 10-12  1. Christians must be grateful for their blessings in life. v 10  a). A saint needs to be grateful for the blessings which he is receiving from the Lord. James 1:17  b). A disciple should be grateful for the blessings which he is receiving from other persons. Gal. 2:10  2. Christians can learn to be contented with their lot in life. v 11  a). A saint should learn to be contented with the necessities of life. 1 Tim. 6:6-8  b). A disciple need to learn to be contented with his temptations in life. James 1:2-4  3. Christians should learn about their revealed nature of life. v 12  a). A saint ought to know how to live with the success of his life and with the discouragements of his life. Prov. 30:9  b). A disciple must learn how to live with the abundance of his life and with the necessities of his life. Prov. 30:9  B. These are the accomplishments of that victory. v 13  1. That victory is achieved by the power of the gospel. Romans 1:16  2. That victory is obtained by trusting in the Lord. Heb. 13:5-6  3. That victory is gained by believing in the promises of God. 1 Cor. 10:13 4. That victory is acquired by praying for Divine help. Heb. 4:14-16 V. THE LIBERALITY OF THE PHILIPPIANS: VS 14-19  A. These were the reasons for their liberality. vs 14-16  1. The Philippians were concerned with their giving.  2. Christians need to be concerned with their giving. 1 Cor. 16:1-2  a). A saint needs to be motivated by this promise of giving. Acts 20:35  b). A disciple should be governed by this principle in giving. Luke 6:36  B. This was the nature of their liberality. vs 17-18  1. The Philippians gave to the point of sacrificing. v 17-18  2. Christians should give to the point of sacrificing. Mark 12:41-44  C. These were the effects of their liberality. v 19  1. The Lord would provide for them. v 19  2. The Lord will provide for us. 2 Cor. 9:6-8 VI. THE SALUTATION: VS 21-23  A. Paul wanted all the saints in Christ to be saluted. v 21  B. Paul send his greeting from the saints in Rome. v 22  C. Paul desired that the grace of Christ should be with them. v 23
