CHAPTER 8

I. THE HEALING OF A LEPER: VS 1-4

A. This was his illness. vs 1-2 1. This man was a leper. 2. Our real sickness is sin. Eph. 2:1-3 B. These were the characteristics of the leper. v 2 1. The leper came to the Lord. John 6:68, 1 Peter 5:6 2. The leper worshipped the Lord. John 4:24, 1 Peter 2:5 3. The leper desired to be cleansed. Acts 2:38, Romans 6:16-18 C. This was his cure. v 3 1. The leper was healed. 2. We can be healed from our sins. Heb. 8:11-12, 1 John 1:7-9 D. This was his instruction. v 4 1. The leper was to offer a gift according to the law of Moses. 2. Christians are to serve the Lord their God with the proper attitude. 1 Tim. 4:12 II. THE HEALING OF THE CENTURION'S SERVANT: VS 5-13 A. These were his requests. vs 5-6 1. The Centurion wanted to see the Lord. v 5, Heb. 12:1-2 2. The Centurion told the Lord his problem. v 6, 1 Peter 5:7 B. This was his reply. v 7 1. Jesus said, "I will come and heal your servant." v 7 2. Our Lord will solve all of our problems according to His will. Phil. 2:13 C. This was his humility. v 8 1. The Centurion told the Lord that it was not necessary for Him to come into his house. v 8 2. Christians must show humility before the Lord their God. James 4:7-10 D. This was his faith. v 9 1. The Centurion told the Lord just speak the word and my servant will be healed. v 9 2. Disciples must have a working faith in the living God. 1 John 5:4 E. This was his appraisal. vs 10-12 1. The Lord praised the faith of the Centurion man. vs 10-12 2. The Lord can praise our faith. Mark 9:23, Heb. 11:6 F. This was his blessing. v 13 1. The Centurion's servant was healed. v 13 2. The Lord will supply all of the physical and spiritual needs of His people. Phil. 4:19 III. THE HEALING OF PETER'S MOTHER-IN-LAW: VS 14-15 A. This was the compassion which our Lord had toward her. v 14 (Our Lord had the compassion to heal her.) B. This was His power to heal. v 15 (Our Lord healed her.) IV. THE MINISTRY OF HEALING: VS 16-17 A. This was the manifestation of His power and zeal. v 16 (Jesus healed those sick people who were brought to Him.) B. This was the purpose of that healing. v 17 (Jesus fulfilled the Messianic prophecies concerning His healing of the sick.) Isa. 53:4 V. THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP. VS 18-22 A. This is the demands for discipleship. vs 19-20 (Each person must love spiritual riches above earthly treasures.) Matt. 6:19- 22 B. This is the urgency of discipleship. vs 21-22 (Each person must not delay his services to God.) Heb. 3:12-13 VI. CALMING THE STORMS OF LIFE: VS 23-27 A. This was their voyage into the storms of life. v 23 1. The disciples of the Lord followed Him into a ship. 2. This is our voyage into the storms of life. Heb. 11:13 B. This was their peril concerning that voyage of life. v 24 1. There arose a great storm on the sea of Galilee. v 24 2. Christians will pass through many storms of life before they can safely reach their destination which is heaven. Romans 8:35-39 C. This was their plea concerning that storm of life. v 25 1. The disciples cried, "Master save us we are perishing." v 25 2. This is the plea concerning our storms of life. Heb. 4:14-16 D. This was their rebuke concerning that storm of life. v 26 1. Our Lord said, "O ye of little faith"? v 26 2. These are the rebukes for our lack of faith. Phil. 4:13, Romans 8:37, 1 Cor. 15:57 E. This was their blessing concerning that storm of life. v 26 1. The Lord calmed the storm. v 26 2. The Lord can calm the storms of our life. Heb. 12:11, Heb. 13:5-6 F. This was their astonishment concerning that storm of life. v 27 1. They were amazed that nature obeyed His voice. v 27 2. Christians are astonished because of the working of God. 2 Cor. 4:16-18 VIII. PREFERRING HOGS OVER CHRIST: VS 28-34 A. These were the needs for that miracle. vs 28-29 1. Those two men were possessed of the devil. John 8:44 2. Those two men were dethroned of their real reasoning power 2 Cor. 4:3- 4 3. Those two men were tormented. Jude 13 B. These were the reasons for that miracle. vs 30-32 1. That miracle was requested. Romans 6:16-18 2. That miracle was granted. 1 John 1:7-9 C. These were the results of that miracle. vs 32-34 1. That miracle demonstrated the power of Christ. Rev. 1:18 2. That miracle cured those two men who were possessed of the devil. 1 John 3:8, l John 4:4 3. That miracle cause an unwise decision to be made on the part of those people who were living in that city because they requested that Jesus depart form their coasts. Rev. 3:20 CHAPTER 9

I. THE HEALING A PARALYZED MAN. VS 1-8

A. This was his need to be healed. vs 1-2 (This man was paralyzed because he was lying on a bed.) B. This was the controversy concerning his being healed. vs 3-6 (Some of the scribes thought that Jesus had blasphemed because He had said thy sin be forgiven.) C. This was the blessings for his being healed. v 7 (The paralyzed man went into the house.) D. This was the result of his being healed. v 8 (The multitude of people glorified God because of the power which Jesus had demonstrated.) II. THE CALL OF MATTHEW: V 9 A. This was his call. (Our Lord said unto Matthew, "Follow me.") Matt. 11:28-30 B. This was his response. (Matthew followed Jesus.) Romans 6:16-18 III. THE SOCIAL LIFE OF JESUS: VS 10-13 A. This was His fellowship with the people. v 10 (Many people came unto our Lord so that they could be with Him.) B. This was the charge brought against Him. v 11 (Jesus was charged with eating with publicans and sinners.) C. This was His answer to those people. vs 12-13 (Jesus replied that He had come to call the righteous to repentance, but He came to call the sinners to repentance.) IV. THE QUESTION CONCERNING FASTING: VS 14-17 A. This was the question concerning fasting. v 14 (The disciples of John asked Jesus why did they fast often and His disciples were not fasting.) B. This was the two fold answer concerning fasting. vs 15-17 1. The first answer was by logic. v 15 (The disciples of Jesus were not fasting because He was still with them.) 2. The second answer was by a parable. vs 16-17 a). The old (the law of Moses) must be fulfilled. Luke 24:44-48, Col. 2:14 b). The new (the law of Christ) must be revealed. Matt. 28:18-20 c). The new (the law of Christ) would give His disciples plenty of time to fast. 2 Cor. 11:27 V. THE TWO MIRACLES: VS 18-26 A. This was the raising of the Jairus' daughter from the dead. vs 18-19, 23-26 1. This was the need for that miracle. v 18 (The daughter of Jairus was sick.) 2. This was the response to that miracle. v 19 (Jesus was going to the house of Jairus to heal her.) 3. This was the sadness of her death. v 23 (When Jesus arrived at her house, she was dead because the people were mourning her death.) 4. This was the power which Jesus had toward death. v 24 (Jesus said, "She is not dead, but sleepeth.") Rev. 1:18 5. This was the result of her being raised from the dead. vs 24-26 (The fame of Jesus became wise spread.) B. This was healing of the woman who had an issued of blood. vs 20-22 1. This was her need to be healed. v 20 (This woman had an issue of blood for twelve years.) 2. This was her faith. vs 20-21 (This lady believed that if she could touch the garment of Jesus she would be made whole.) 3. This was her blessing. v 22 (This lady was healed by Jesus because she had touched the garment of His garment.) VI. TWO BLIND MEN RECEIVED THEIR SIGHT: VS 27-31 A. This was their cry. v 27 (Those blind men cried for mercy.) B. This was their challenge. v 28 1. The Lord asked them, "Believe ye that I am able to do this"? 2. The two blind men replied that the Lord could heal them. C. These were their blessings. vs 29-30 1. There was the Master's touch upon their eyes. 2. There was the opening of their eyes. D. This was their charge. v 30 (Those two blind men were charged not to tell anyone of that miracle.) E. This was their exuberance. v 31 (Those two blind men spread the fame of Jesus in all that country.) VII. THE HEALING OF A DUMB MAN: VS 32-35 A. This was his need to be healed. v 32 (That man was dumb.) B. This was his miracle in being healed. v 33 (That man was healed.) C. This was the charge against Jesus for performing that miracle. v 34 (The Pharisees said that Jesus was casting out devils by the devil himself.) D. This was the result of that miracle. v 35 (Jesus keep preaching the Kingdom of God and healing the sick.) VIII. THE NEED FOR LABORERS: VS 36-38 A. This is the state of humanity. v 36 (The sheep are scatter because they have no Shepherd.) B. This is the greatness of that harvest. v 37 (The harvest for lost souls is great because most people are lost.) C. These are the laborers for that harvest. v 37 (There are few laborers who are willing to work in that harvest for lost souls.) D. These were the demands of that laborers. v 38 1. Christians were to pray for the lost. 1 Tim. 2:1-4 2. Saints needed to work in the vineyard of the Lord. 1 Cor. 15:57-58 3. Disciples should teach other people the truth. John 8:31-32 CHAPTER 10

I. THE CALLING OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES: VS 1-4

A. This was the calling of the twelve apostles. v 1 (Jesus called the twelve apostles.) B. This was the credentials of the twelve apostles. v 1 (Jesus gave the twelve apostles power to perform miracles.) C. The names of those twelve apostles are listed in verses 2-4. II. THE MISSION OF THE TWELVE APOSTLES: VS 5-15 A. This was their restricted mission. vs 5-6 (The apostles were to go unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.) B. This was their message. v 7 (The apostles were to preach that the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.) C. These were their works. v 8 (The apostles were to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and cast our devils.) D. This was their support. vs 9-10 (The apostles were to take nothing on their journey because they would be provided for in a material way.) E. These were their instructions. vs 11-15 1. The apostles were to receive those people who would receive them. 2. The apostles were to reject those people who would reject them. III. THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PERSECUTIONS: VS 16-23 A. This is the assurance of persecutions. vs 16-18 (The righteous will be persecuted because evil men hate the truth of God.) 2 Tim. 3:13 B. This is the help for being persecuted. vs 19-20 (There is Divine help for those persons who are persecuted.) Heb. 4:14-16 C. This is the scope of being persecuted. vs 21-22 (Member of a family will persecute each other.) D. These are the instructions for those persons who are persecuted. v 23 (The persecuted persons must flee from their persecutions.) IV. THE QUALIFICATIONS OF DISCIPLESHIP: VS 24-33 A. This is the attitude for being a disciple. vs 24-25 (A disciple should not fear what man can do unto him.) Heb. 12:28-29 B. This is the courage for being a disciple. vs 26-28 (A disciple has the Lord as being His helper.) Heb. 13:5-6 C. This is the value for being a disciple. vs 29-31 (The Lord will supply the needs of a disciple.) Phil. 4:19 D. This is the faithfulness of being a disciple. vs 32-33 (A disciple must be faithful unto the Lord.) Rev. 2:10 V. THE CONFLICT OF THE TRUTH: VS 34-42 A. These are the characteristics of the truth. vs 34-36 1. Religious truth opposes religious error. v 34, Gal. 5:17 2. Religious truth divides households. vs 35-36, Gal. 4:16 B. These are the requirements for obeying the truth. vs 37-39 1. Obeying the truth demands supreme love for God. v 37, 1 John 5:3 2. Obeying the truth commands cross-bearing. v 38, Gal. 2:20 3. Obeying the truth requires self-sacrifices. v 39, Romans 12:1-2 C. These are the rewards for obeying the truth. vs 40-42 1. If Christians obey the truth, they can have fellowship with God. v 40, 2 Cor. 5:18-21 2. If disciples obey the truth, they will be righteously rewarded. v 41, 2 Tim. 4:6-8 3. If saints obey the truth, their services will be praised. v 42, Rev. 14:13 CHAPTER 11

I. THE QUESTION OF JOHN, THE BAPTIST: VS 1-6

A. This was his doubt. vs 1-3 (John sent two of his disciples to Jesus so that they could asked Him, "Art thou he that should come, or do we look, for another?") B. This was his encouragement. vs 4-5 (The two disciples of John were to tell him that the mighty works of God were being done.) C. This was his exhortation. v 6 (Those who do not become offended in working for our Lord will be blessed.) II. THE TRIBUTE TO JOHN, THE BAPTIST: VS 7-15 A. This was the popularity of John. vs 7-9 (John was more than a prophet.) B. This was the purpose of John. v 10 (John prepared the way for the coming of our Lord.) C. This was the greatness of John. v 11 1. John was as great as any man who lived under the law of Moses. 2. A Christian is greater than John because Christians are citizens of the Kingdom of God. Acts 2:47 D. These were the works of John. vs 12-15 1. John prepared the way for Christ. vs 12-14 2. John fulfilled prophetic prophecy. v 15, Mal. 4:5 III. THE FAULT-FINDING GENERATION: VS 16-19 A. This was their evil attitude. v 16 (That evil generation could not be satisfied.) B. These were their evil charges. v 17 (That evil generation could neither morn nor laugh.) C. These were their false accusations. vs 18-19 1. That evil generation thought John was a devil. v 18 2. That evil generation thought Jesus was a gluttonous man. v 19 IV. THE MANNER OF THE JUDGMENT: VS 20-24 A. This was the responsibility for their opportunities in life. v 20 (When a person hears the word of God, that person should not neglect his duty to God.) Heb. 2:1-4 B. This was the accountability for their being impenitent. v 21 (If a person learns the truth of God, that person is accountable unto God for his conduct.) Acts 17:30-31 C. This is responsibility for our privileges. v 22 (Each person is accountability for his opportunities in life.) 2 Cor. 5:10 D. This is the accountability for our pride. vs 23-24 (Each person is accountability for that which he knows.) James 3:1-4 V. SPIRITUAL WISDOM: VS 25-27 A. These are the recipients of spiritual wisdom. v 25 (The humble are the persons who receive spiritual wisdom from God.) 1 Cor. 1:19,27 B. This is the reason for spiritual wisdom. v 26 (Spiritual wisdom seem good to God.) James 1:5-8 C. This is the source of spiritual wisdom. v 27 (All spiritual wisdom and knowledge is hidden in Christ.) Col. 2:3 VI. THE GREAT INVITATION: VS 28-30 A. These are the characteristics of the invitation which was given. 1. The Lord says come. Isa. 1:18-20 2. The bride says come. Rev. 22:17 B. These are the persons who are invited to come. 1. Every person is invited to come unto the Lord. 1 Tim. 2:1-4 2. The Lord desires that all persons should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 C. These are the reasons for that great invitation. 1. Christians can find rest for their souls in this life. Heb. 8:12 2. Disciples can find eternal rest in heaven. Rev. 14:13 D. This are the commands for that great invitation. 1. Christians must carry the cross of their Lord. Gal. 2:20 2. Disciples must learn of their Lord. 2 Tim. 1:13 E. These are the motivations for that great invitation. 1. Christians have the examples of Jesus. 1 Peter 2:21 2. Disciples have the blessings of Christ. John 14:27 3. Saints have the assurances of their Lord. Romans 8:37, Heb. 4:14-16 CHAPTER 12

I. THE AUTHORITY OF CHRIST: VS 1-8

A. This was His permission. v 1 (The disciples were walking in a corn field and were plucking corn with which to eat.) B. This His charge. v 2 (The Pharisees told Jesus that His disciples were breaking the law of Moses concerning the Sabbath day.) C. This was His answer. vs 3-5 1. David enter into the house of God and eat the shew bread which was for the priests of God. vs 3-4 2. The priests in the temple profane the Sabbath days and are guiltless. v 5 D. This was His authority. vs 6-8 (Jesus revealed that He was Lord of the Sabbath days.) II. THE HEALING OF THE MAN WITH A WITHERED HAND: VS 9-14 A. This was the question. vs 9-10 (Jesus was asked was it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days?) B. This was the answer. vs 11-12 (Jesus revealed that it was lawful to do well on the Sabbath days.) C. This was the miracle. v 13 (The man's hand was healed.) D. This was the results. v 14 (The Pharisees took counsel how they might destroy Him.) III. THE CHOSEN SERVANT: JESUS VS 15-21 A. This was His miracles. v 15 (Jesus healed many of the people.) B. This was His charge. v 16 (Jesus charged those persons who had been healed not to tell anyone.) C. This was His reason. vs 17-21 (The miracles which Jesus did fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament.) Isa. 42:1 IV. STANDING FOR CHRIST: VS 22-30 A. These are His blessings. vs 22-24 1. The blessings of Jesus amazed some people. v 23 2. The blessings of Jesus angered other people. v 24 B. This was the charge against Him. v 24 (The Pharisees said that Jesus was casting our devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils.) C. This was His reasoning. vs 25-28 1. Satan is not against himself. v 25 2. The kingdom of Satan can not be divided. vs 26-27 D. This was His power. vs 28-30 1. The power of Christ is greater than the power of Satan. 1 John 3:8 2. The Lord has overcome Satan. Rev. 1:18 V. CORRUPT COMMUNICATION: VS 31-37 A. These are the influences of corrupt communication. vs 31-32 1. Corrupt language causes a person to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. 2. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit would be our rebelling against the laws of God. Heb. 2:1-4, Heb. 10:26-31 B. These are the products of corrupt communication. vs 33-35 1. Evil communication produces evil fruit. vs 33-34, Prov. 4:23, Prov. 23:7 2. Good communication engenders good fruit. v 35, Col. 4:6 C. These will be the outcome of corrupt communication. vs 36-37 1. Evil communication would cause us to be lost. Jude 14-15 2. Good communication will cause us to be saved. 1 Peter 3:15 VI. THE GREAT SIGN WHICH WAS GIVEN: VS 38-45 A. This was the request for that sign. v 38 (Some of the scribes and Pharisees wanted to see a sign from our Lord.) B. This was the rebuke for seeking that sign. v 39 (Jesus called the sign-seekers a sinful and an adulterous generation.) C. This was the sign which was given. vs 39-40 1. Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a whale. Jonah 1:17 2. The Son of man would be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 1 Cor. 15:1-4, Romans 1:16 D. These were the responsibilities of that sign. vs 41-45 1. The Lord demands repentance. v 41, Luke 13:3 2. The Lord commands man to have wisdom. v 42, James 1:5-8 3. The Lord requires faithfulness. vs 43-45, 2 Peter 2:20-22 VII. SPIRITUAL RELATIONSHIPS: VS 46-50 A. This was the request which was made. vs 46-47 (The family of Jesus wanted to see Him.) B. This was the question which was asked. vs 48 (Jesus replied who is my family?) C. This was the answer which was given. vs 49-50 (The disciples of Christ are His family.) Acts 2:47 CHAPTER 13

I. THE SETTING FOR PARABLES: VS 1-2 (Great multitudes of people came to hear Jesus teach the words of life.) John 6:68

II. THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER: VS 3-9

A. This was the sower. v 3 (The sower would be the one who teaches the word of God.) Heb. 5:14-16 B. This was the seed. v 4 (The seed would be the word of God which is taught.) Romans 10:17 C. This was the field. vs 4-9 (The field would be the heart of man.) Prov. 4:23, Prov. 23:7 1. The wayside would be the hard ground. v 4 2. The stony places would be the ground which had no soil for the roots to germinate. vs 5-6 3. The thorny ground would be the ground which could not be cultivated. v 7 4. The good ground would be the ground which would be suitable for spiritual growth and development. v 8 D. This was the admonition. v 9 (Each person should hear this parable and understand this parable.) III. THE REASONS FOR PARABLES: VS 10-17 A. This was the question which was asked concerning parables. v 10 (The disciples asked Jesus, "Why do you speak unto them in parables?") B. This was the answer which was given concerning the parables. vs 11-12 1. The disciples where chosen to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven. 2. The multitude was not chosen to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven. C. These were the causes for those parables. vs 13-17 1. Jesus spake in parables so that He could fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament. vs 13-15, Isa. 6:9 2. Jesus revealed that many people in the Old Testament desired to know the truth which He was revealing unto them. vs 16-17, 1 Peter 1:10-12 IV. THE INTERPRETATION OF THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER. VS 18- 23 A. This was the admonition of the parable. v 18 (We must hear the parable of the sower.) B. These were the revealed truths of the parable. vs 19-23 1. The wayside hearers would hear the word of God, but they had no understanding of Spiritual truths. v 19, 2 Tim. 3:13 2. The stone hearted hearers would hear the word of God, but they refused to grow in spiritual because persecutions were able to overcome them. vs 20-21, James 1:12 3. The thorn hearted hearers would hear the word of God, but they allowed the deceitfulness of riches to overcome them. v 22, 1 Tim. 6:9-10 4. The good hearted hearers would hear the word of God, but they would grow in spiritual and produce the fruits of righteousness. v 23, 1 Peter 2:1-3 V. THE PARABLE OF THE TARES: VS 34-30 A. These were the two seeds. vs 24-25 1. There was the good seed which would be the word of God. v 24, Romans 10:17, 2 Tim. 3:16-17 2. There was the evil seed which would be the doctrines of men. v 25, Matt. 15:8-9 B. These were the two fruits. v 26 1. There was the good fruit which would be the fruits of the Spirit. Gal. 5:22- 23 2. There was the evil fruit which would be the doctrines of men. Jude 3-4 C. There were the two harvests. vs 27-30 1. The faithful persons will be rewarded with eternal life. Rev. 2:10 2. The wicked persons will be punished with eternal damnation. Matt. 10:28 VI. THE PARABLE OF THE MUSTARD SEED: VS 31-32 (This parable explains how the Kingdom grows in size.)

VII. THE PARABLE OF THE LEAVEN: V 33 (This parable shows how the Kingdom grows by conversions.)

VIII. JESUS IS THE MODEL TEACHER: VS 34-35

A. This is how Jesus taught the people. v 34 (Jesus spoke in parables.) B. This is how Jesus revealed hidden truth. v 35 (Jesus explained hidden truth in parables so that He could fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament.) Psa. 78:2 XI. THE INTERPRETATION OF THE PARABLE OF THE TARES: VS 36- 43 A. These were the two sowers in the parable of the tares. vs 37-39 1. There was the Son of God who is our Master teacher. v 37, Heb. 1:1-3 2. There was the devil who is the master of deception. v 38, 2 Cor. 11:14-15 B. These were the two seeds in the parable of the tares. v 39 1. One seed was righteous because this seed would be the word of God. Acts 20:32 2. The other seed was evil because this seed would be the false doctrines of Satan. 2 Peter 2:1-3 C. These were the two harvests of the parable of the tares. vs 40-43 1. The righteous persons will be rewarded with eternal life. Romans 2:7 2. The wicked persons will be punished with everlasting punishment. Romans 6:23 X. THE PARABLE OF THE HIDDEN TREASURE: V 44 A. This was the pursuit for that hidden treasure. (A man found this treasure.) 1 Peter 1:22-23 B. This was the sacrifices which was made for that hidden treasure. (That man sold all that he had so that he could secure that field.) Phil. 3:7-8 C. The was the securing of that hidden treasure. (That man bought that field.) 2 Tim. 4:6-8 XI. THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD PEARLS: VS 45-46 A. This was the pursuit for that those goodly pearls. v 45 (This man was looking for goodly pearls.) Acts 17:26-28 B. This was the observation of that goodly pearl. v 46 (That man found the pearl of great price.) John 8:31-32 C. This was the sacrifice for that goodly pearl. v 46 (That man sold all that he had so that he could buy that pearl.) 1 Peter :21- 22 D. This was the security of that goodly pearl. v 46 (That man bought that pearl.) Rev. 2:10 XII. THE PARABLE OF THE NET: VS 47-50 A. This was the call of that parable. v 47 (The gospel plan of salvation is for all people.) Acts 10:34-35 B. This was the response of that parable. v 48 1. Those persons who obey will be saved. Heb. 5:8-9 2. Those persons who disobedient will be lost. 2 Thess 1:7-9 C. These are the rewards of that parable. vs 49-52 1. There will be a judgment for all persons. v 49, 2 Cor. 5:10 2. There will be punishment for the wicked persons. v 50, Matt. 10:28 3. There will be happiness for the righteous persons. v 50, vs 49-50, Romans 2:7 XIII. TREASURES: VS 51-52 A.
