III. THE BIRTH OF JOHN, THE BAPTIST IS FORETOLD: VS 13-15

Lord said that Elizabeth would have a son whose name would be called John.)

CHAPTER 2
I. THE BIRTH OF JESUS: VS 1-7

during the time that all people would be taxed.)
B. This was the place of His birth. vs 4-5 (Jesus was born in Bethlehem
of Judea.)
C. The accomplishment of His birth. vs 6-7 (Mary brought forth her
firstborn Son.) Gal. 4:4-7
II. THE PROCLAMATION OF HIS BIRTH: VS 8-20
A. These were the announcements of His birth. vs 8-12
1. The angel of the Lord would announce His birth to the shepherds
abiding in the fields. vs 8-9
2. These were the blessings of announcing His birth. vs 10-11 (All
people of the earth would be spiritually blessed.) Eph. 1:3

was the authority of John, the Baptist.) 2 Tim. 4:1-4
B. These were the purposes of his preaching. vs 3-6
1. John preached to offer salvation to those persons who would accept
it. v 3, Rev. 22:17
2. John preached to fulfill prophecy. vs 4-6, Isa. 40:3-5
C. These were the rebukes of his preaching. vs 7-9
1. John rebuked the Jewish leaders. v 7, Matt. 5:19
2. John revealed that the Jewish leaders would have to produce the

b). A Christian needs to mediate upon the word of God. Psa. 1:1-3

CHAPTER 6
I. THE TRADITION OF THE SABBATH: VS 1-5
A. This was the preserving of life on the Sabbath. v 1 (They were
eating corn in the corn field on the Sabbath.)
B. This was the false accusation of breaking the Sabbath. v 2 (Some
of the Pharisees said, "You are breaking the Sabbath.")
C. This was the example of preserving life on the Sabbath. vs 3-4
(David ate the shewbread which was preserved for the priests of God.)
D. This was the results of preserving life on the Sabbath. v 5 (The
Son of man is Lord of the Sabbath.)
II. THE HEALING OF THE MAN WHO HAD A WITHERED HAND: VS 6- 11
A. This was the need for his being healed. v 6 (There was a man who
had a withered right hand.)
B. This was the opposition for his being healed. v 8 (It was the Sabbath
day.)
C. These were the commands for his being healed. v 8 (He had to rise
up, and stand forth.)
D. This was the assurance of his being healed. vs 9-10 (His hand was
made whole.)
E. This was the animosity for his being healed. v 11 (Most of the
people were filled with anger.)
III. THE TWELVE ARE CHOSEN: VS 12-19
A. This was the preparation for choosing the twelve. v 12 (Jesus prayed
all night.) Phi. 4:6
B. This was the calling of the twelve. v 13 (Jesus would make twelve
of His disciples to be apostles.)
C. The names of the twelve apostles are listed in verses 14-16
D. This was the work which Jesus done with His twelve apostles. vs

A. These are the commands to love our enemies. v 27

1. Christians must bless those persons who are persecuting them. v

C. This is the way to love our enemies. v 30 (A Christian must give

VI. JUDGING OTHER PEOPLE: VS 37-42
A. These are the mandates concerning the judgment of other people.

1. A Christian is not to judge other persons because he would be judged
by the Lord.
2. A disciple is not to condemn other persons because he would be
condemned by the Lord.
3. A saint must forgive other persons so that he can be forgiven by
the Lord.
B. These are the reasons for not judging other people. vs 38-42
1. Christians reap that which they sow whether it be good or bad.

2. Disciples are unqualified to make judgment on other people. v 39,
2 Cor. 5:10
3. Brethren would be inconsistent in their judgment of other people.

VII. PRODUCING GOOD FRUITS: VS 43-45
A. This is the way of determining good fruit. vs 43-44 (Fruit produces
after its kind whether it be good or bad.) Matt. 7:16-17
B. This is the origin of producing good fruit. v 45 (The heart is
the center of life.) Matt. 12:34-35
VIII. BEING OBEDIENT: VS 46-49
A. This was the rebuke for our being disobedient. v 46 (Each person
must do what the Lord commands him to do.) Matt. 7:21
B. These are the requirements for our being obedient. v 47
1. We as alien sinners must come to Christ. Matt. 11:28-30
2. We as alien sinners must obey His laws. John 12:48
C. These are the blessings for our obedience. v 48 (Christians can

CHAPTER 7
I. THE ROMAN SOLDIER AND JESUS: VS 1-10
A. This was his need for Jesus. v 1-2 (The soldier had a sick son.)
B. This was his opportunity to receive Jesus. v 3 (The soldier had
heard of Jesus.)
C. This was his request to receive Jesus. vs 3-5 (The soldier sent
for Jesus.)
D. This was his faith in Jesus. vs 6-9 (The soldier knew that Jesus
just had to speak the word and his son would be healed.)
E. This was his blessing from Jesus. v 10 (Jesus healed the son of
the soldier.)
II. JESUS DEMONSTRATES HIS POWERS OVER DEATH: VS 11-17
A. This was the need for Jesus to demonstrate His power over death.
vs 11-12 (There was a dead man being carried out to be buried.) Romans
5:12
B. This was the motivation for Jesus to show His power of death. v
23 (Jesus had compassion on the weeping mother.) Heb. 4:14-16
C. These were the ways in which Jesus demonstrated His power over
death. vs 14-15
1. Jesus came and touched the bier and said, "Arise." v 14
2. Jesus delivered the resurrected person to his mother. v 15
D. These were the results of Jesus demonstrating His power over death.

1. Jesus raising the dead invoked Godly fear. v 16, Heb. 12:28-29
2. Jesus raising the dead caused God to be glorified. v 16, 1 Cor.

III. THE WEAKNESS OF JOHN, THE BAPTIST: VS 18-23
A. This was the cause of John showing his weakness. v 18 (John heard
of the fame of Jesus.)
B. This was the manner in which John showed his weakness. vs 19-20
(John sent two of his disciples unto Jesus so that they could asked, "Art
thou he?")
C. These were the strengths for the weakness of John. vs 21-22
1. The power of God was confirmed to John. v 21
2. The testimony of God was revealed to John. v 22
D. This was the hope of his weakness. v 23 (John should not be offended.)
IV. THE TRIBUTE TO JOHN, THE BAPTIST. VS 24-30
A. These were the praises for the work of John, the Baptist. vs 24-27

4. John fulfilled his mission upon the earth. v 27
B. This was the greatness of John, the Baptist. v 28
1. John was named as being among the great prophets of God.
2. Christians are greater than John, the Baptist because they are
citizens of the Kingdom of God. Acts 2:47, Heb. 12:28-30
C. These were the responses to the work of John, the Baptist. vs 29-30
1. Some of the people accepted his work. v 29
2. Some of the people rejected his work. v 30
V. THE ATTITUDE OF PEOPLE: VS 31-35
A. This was the disposition of their attitude. v 31 (Most people are
hard to please.)
B. These were the revelations of their attitude. v 32
1. Some people want happiness. v 32
2. Some people want sadness. v 32
C. These were the fulfillments of their attitude. vs 33-34
1. John came in sadness, but he was rejected. v 33
2. Christ came in happiness, but He was denied. v 34
D. This was the results of their attitude. v 35 (Our character will
reveal our attitude.)
VI. A SINFUL WOMAN IS FORGIVEN OF HER SINS: VS 36-50
A. This was her need to be forgiven. vs 36-38
1. She was a sinner before God.
2. We have all sinned against God. Romans 3:10, 23
B. This was her opposition in being forgiven. vs 39-40
1. The Pharisee would not forgive her.
2. When the sinner repents, we as being a Christian must forgive him.
Eph. 4:32
C. This was her justification in being forgiven. vs 41-43
1. God was willing to forgive her.
2. God is willing to forgive us. Heb. 8:12-13
D. These were the reasons for her being forgiven. vs 44-47
1. She repented of her sins. v 44, Luke 13:3
2. She honored Christ. v 45, Phil. 2:5-11
3. She anointed Christ. v 46, 1 Peter 3:15
4. She needed to be forgiven. v 47, Eph. 2:1-3
E. This was the assurance of her being forgiven. v 48
1. Jesus said, "Thy sins are forgiven."
2. Our sins in being a Christian can be forgiven. 1 John 1:7-9
F. This was the blessing of her being forgiven. vs 49-50
1. Jesus said to her, "Go in peace".
2. Christians can have the peace of Christ. John 16:33
CHAPTER 8
I. JESUS MINISTERED UNTO HUMANITY: VS 1-3
A. The scope of His ministry was widespread. v 1
B. The work of His ministry was preaching the gospel. v 1
C. There were great multitude following Him. vs 1-3
II. THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER: VS 4-15
A. This was the teaching of the parable of the sower with its interpretation.
vs 4- 15
1. The sower was the teacher. v 5 a). The word of God must be taught.
Matt. 28:18-20
b). Each Christian should be a teacher of the word of God. Heb. 5:14-16
2. The seed was the word of God. vs 5,11 a). The word of God is that
which produces faith in God. Romans 10:17
b). The word of God is that which converts the soul of man. Psa. 19:7,
1 Peter 1:22-23
3. The field was the heart of man. vs 5-8, 12-15 a). The wayside hearers
are those persons who allow the devil to steal the word of God from their
hearts. vs 5,12, Psa. 119:11, Psa. 1:1-3
b). The rock hearted hearers are those persons who allow the powers
of temptations to overcome them. vs 6,13, 2 Tim. 4:10, 1 John 2:15-17
c). The thorn hearted hearers are those persons who allow the pleasures
of this life to conquer them. vs 7,14, Heb. 11:24-27
d). The good hearted hearers are those persons who produce the fruit
of righteousness. vs 8,15, Gal. 5:22-23
III. THE VALUE OF LIGHT: VS 16-18
A. These are the powers of light. v 16
1. Light should not be hidden. Eph. 5:14-16
2. Light must radiate the truth of God. Romans 13:11-12
B. These are the influences of light. v 17
1. Light will influence other people for good. Matt. 5:14-16
2. Light will reveal our own character in life. 1 Peter 3:1-6
C. This is the source of light. v 18
1. The word of God gives light. Psa. 119:105
2. The word of God increases our responsibilities. Acts 20:32
IV. THE TRUE RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST: VS 19-21
A. This was the desire for that true relationship with Christ. vs
19-21 (The fleshly kin folks of Jesus desired that relationship.)
B. These are the conditions for His relationship. v 21
1. All people should hear the word of God. Romans 10:17, Heb. 11:6
2. All people need to obey the word of God. Romans 6:16-18
V. OVERCOMING THE STORMS OF LIFE: VS 22-25
A. This is the occasion for the storms of life. v 22 (Christians must
launch out into life.) Job 14:1-2
B. This is the assurance for the storms of life. v 23 (Those persecutions
of life will come.) 2 Tim. 3:12, James 1:2-4
C. These are the fears of the storms of life. v 24 (We cry, "Master,
Master, we perish") Isa. 41:10, 1 Cor. 15:57
D. This is our victory over the storms of life. v 25 (Our Lord will
rebuke the storms of life for us.) 1 Cor. 10:13, Romans 8:37
E. These are the results of the storms of life. v 25
1. Christians are rebuked for having doubt. James 1:5-8
2. Disciples are amazed at His providence love. Heb. 12:5-11
VI. JESUS HEALED THE DEMONIAC MAN: VS 26-40
A. This was the need for this man to be healed. vs 26-29 (This man
was driven of the devil in life.) John 8:44
B. This was the reality of his being healed. vs 30-33 (The devils
came out of the man.) James 4:7
C. These were the blessings of his being healed. vs 34-36
1. He was at the feet of Jesus.
2. He was clothed, and in his right mind.
D. These were the results of his being healed. vs 37-40
1. The healing of this man caused Jesus to be rejected. v 37
2. The healing of this man caused Jesus to be accepted. vs 38-40
VII. JESUS DEMONSTRATED HIS POWER OVER DEATH: VS 41-42, 49- 56
A. This was the need for His power. vs 41-42
1. The daughter of Jairus would die. vs 41-42,49
2. The sinner needs the Lord because he is dead in his sins. Eph.
2:1-3, 1 Cor. 15:57-58
B. This was the unbelief in His power. v 49
1. They said, "Thy daughter is dead, trouble not the Master."
2. We are told not to trouble the Master with our problems of life.
Mark 16:16, Romans 1:16
C. This was the blessings of His power. v 50
1. Jesus said to Jairus, "Fear not : believe only, and she shall be
made whole."
2. If Christians would believe, they could overcome the powers of
sin. Phil. 4:13,19
D. This was the way by which Jesus demonstrated His power over death.
vs 51- 56
1. Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus from her death. vs 51-56
2. Jesus has the power to help His disciples to overcome the powers
of sin. Gal. 2:20, Phi. 2:13
VIII. JESUS HEALED THE ISSUE OF BLOOD: VS 43-48
A. This was her condition. v 43 (She had an issue of blood for twelve
years.)
B. This was her cure. v 44 (She touched the border of His garment
and was cured.)
C. This was her confession. vs 45-47 (She confessed that she had touched
the border of His garment.)
D. These were her blessings. v 48 (She was comforted and found peace.)
