I. THE NATURE OF JESUS CHRIST: VS 1-4

A. This was the preexistence of Jesus Christ. v 1 (Jesus Christ lived in heaven in being the Word God before His Divine Birth upon the earth because "He was from the beginning.") This was the manifestation of Jesus Christ. vs 2 (Jesus was transformed on the mount of transfiguration "For the life was manifested, and we have see it.") Matt. 17:1-5, John 6:28, John 12:48

D. This was the testimony of Jesus Christ. v 3 (Jesus had living witnesses who saw Him because John said "That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you.") 1 Cor. 15:1-8 E. This was the evidence of Jesus Christ. v 4 (We have the evidence to believe in Jesus Christ because John said "These things write we unto you.") Romans 10:17, John 20:30-31

II. HAVING FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD: VS 5-10

A. These are the needs for having fellowship with God. v 5 1. Christians need the light of God which would signify His truth, love and mercy. Titus 2:11-12 2. Saints do not need the darkness of Satan which would denote the ignorance, superstition and rebellion.) 2 Cor. 4:3-4 B. These are the requirements for having fellowship with God. vs 6-7 1. Christians can not walk in darkness which would denote ignorance, superstition and sin. v 6, John 3:18-21 2. Disciples must walk in the light which would indicate truth, love and mercy. v 7, Psa. 119:105, Phil. 2:15-16 C. These are the blessings for having fellowship with God. vs 8-10 1. God gives us freedom from deceit which would overcome us. v 8, Gal. 6:6-9 2. God gives us freedom from our sins which we have committed against Him. v 9, Eph. 1:7 3. God helps us to overcome the powers of sin which we commit because of the weakness of our flesh. v 10, Matt. 22:29, 2 Tim. 2:13

CHAPTER 2

I. THE FORGIVENESS OF OUR SINS: VS 1-6

A. These are the needs for our forgiveness of sins. v 1 1. A Christians should not sin. Romans 6:12-13 2. Each person has sinned. Romans 3:23 B. These are the reasons for our forgiveness of sins. vs 1-2 1. Jesus Christ is our Advocate with God. v 1, 1 Tim. 2:5-6 2. Jesus Christ is our atoning sacrifice for our sins. v 2, Heb. 10:10 C. These are the requirements for our forgiveness of sins. vs 3-6 1. Christians must keep the commandments of God. v 3, Heb. 5:8-9 2. Saints should follow the truth of God. v 4, John 14:6 3. Disciples need to demonstrate the perfected love of God. v 5, Col. 3:14

II. THE VALUE OF LIGHT: VS 7-11

A. This is the source of light. v 7 1. The word of God is the origin of light. Psa. 119:105 2. The word of God demands love. Mal. 6:8 B. This is the personification of light. v 8 1. Jesus is the light of the world. v 8 2. Jesus demonstrates the absolute love of God. John 15:13 C. These are the requirements for our manifesting light. vs 9-11 1. A Christian can not manifest light by hating his brother. v 9, Prov. 10:12 2. A saint can manifest light by loving his brother. vs 10-11, John 13:34-35

III. OUR OWN SPIRITUAL GROWTH: VS 12-14

A. This is the beginning of our own spiritual growth. v 12 1. Our spiritual growth starts with the forgiveness of our sins. Heb. 8:11-12 2. Little children are to grow in spirituality. 1 Peter 2:1-3 B. These are the developments of our own spiritual growth. v 13 1. A child grows into spiritual maturity by knowing the Lord. Heb. 4:12- 14 2. A young man grows into spiritual manhood by believing in the Lord. 1 John 5:4 3. A father grows into spiritual fatherhood by trusting in the Lord. 2 Tim. 1:12 C. These are the effects of our own spiritual growth. v 14 1. A father is demonstrating his spiritual fatherhood by trusting in the Lord. 2 Tim. 4:6-8 2. A young man is demonstrating his spiritual manhood by believing in the Lord. Mark 9:24 a). A young man is strong in the Lord. Eph. 6:10-13 b). A young man has the word of God dwelling in him. Col. 3:16-17 c). A young man is overcoming the devil. 1 John 4:4

IV. THE POWER OF WORLDLINESS: VS 15-17

A. These are the restrictions of worldliness. v 15 1. Christians must not love the world in general. James 4:4 2. Disciples should not love the things of the world. 2 Cor. 6:17-18 B. These are the effects of worldliness. v 15 1. Worldliness would cause us to hate God. Matt. 6:24 2. Worldliness would engender us to be carnal minded. Romans 8:6-8 C. These are the traits of worldliness. v 16 1. Worldliness would be the lust of the flesh. Gal. 5:19-21 2. Worldliness would be the lust of the eyes. Gen. 13:10 3. V. THE ANTICHRIST: VS 18-23

A. This is the reality of the Antichrist. v 18 ("Even now there are many Antichrist.") B. This is the origin of the Antichrist. v 19 (They left the truth.) C. This is the revelation of the Antichrist. vs 20-21 (The truth reveals the traits of an Antichrist.) D. This is the nature of the Antichrist. vs 22-23 (Those Antichrist deny that Jesus is the Christ.)

VI. OUR ABIDING IN CHRIST: VS 24-29

A. These are the needs for our abiding in Christ. v 24 1. We as being alien sinners must become a new creature in Christ so that we can be saved eternally. 2 Cor. 5:17 2. We as being Christians need to be reconciled unto God who works in Christ for our own redeeming purposes. 2 Cor. 5:18-21 B. These are the motivations for our abiding in Christ. v 25 1. Disciples are promised eternal life. Romans 6:23 2. Christians are promised to reign with Christ. Rev. 2:26-27 C. These are the hinderances for our abiding in Christ. v 26 1. Christians must fight against the lust of the flesh. Gal. 5:17 2. Disciples need to overcome false teachers. Jude 3-4 D. These are the effects for our abiding in Christ. vs 27-29 1. Christians would have the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. v 27, Acts 2:38, Eph. 1:13-14 2. Saints would be prepared for the second coming of Christ. v 28, Matt. 25:34 3. Disciples would be manifesting the righteousness of God. v 29, Phil. 1:11

CHAPTER 3

I. OUR OWN SPIRITUAL SONSHIP: VS 1-3

A. These are the characteristics of our own Spiritual Sonship. v 1 1. Each person is a son of God by the creation of his life. Acts 17:26-27 2. A Christian is a son of God by the regeneration of his life. Gal. 4:4-7 B. These are the blessings of our own Spiritual Sonship. v 2 1. Our sonship consists of a physical body. Romans 12:1-2 2. Our sonship includes an Eternal Soul. Matt. 10:28 3. Our sonship comprises an Eternal Spirit. 1 Cor. 6:19-20, 1 Thess. 5:23 C. These will be the traits of our own Spiritual Sonship. v 2 1. Our Spiritual Sonship will consist of a Spiritual Body. 2 Cor. 5:1-4 2. Our Spiritual Sonship will include an Eternal Soul. Matt. 16:25-26 3. II. THE POWERS OF SIN: VS 4-10

A. These are the characteristics of sin. v 4 1. Sin is coming short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 2. Sin is breaking the law of God. James 2:10 B. These are the ways by which we can escape from sin. vs 5-6 1. Disciples can escape the guilt of sin by being in Christ. v 5, Romans 8:1 2. I. THE POWER OF RELIGIOUS ERROR: VS 1-6

CHAPTER 5

I. THE EVIDENCE OF OUR NEW BIRTH: VS 1-5

A. These are the characteristics of our new birth. v 1 1. Our new birth starts with an obedient faith. v 1, Heb. 11:6 2. The new birth begins by our obeying the gospel of Christ. 2 Thess. 1:7-9

B. These are the proofs of our new birth. v 2 1. Christians must keep the commandments of God. John 14:15 2. Disciples should keep each one of the commandments of God. James 2:10

C. These are the reasons for our new birth. vs 3-4 1. The commandments of God can be kept. v 3, Rev. 22:14 2. Christians can overcome the world. v 4, Romans 12:1-2 D. These are the effects of our new birth. v 5 1. Our new birth give us a saving faith. Mark 9:23, Romans 8:37 2. Our new birth brings us a victory over the world. 1 Cor. 15:57

II. THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST: VS 6-12

A. These are the reasons for His testimony. v 6 1. Jesus came by water because this would signify the baptism of Christ. Matt. 3:13-17 2. Jesus came by blood because this would indicate the crucifixion of Christ on the cross. Matt. 27:29-49 B. This are the proofs of His testimony. 1. The Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit are the three Divine Persons who bear witness of Jesus Christ became the Word God was born Jesus Christ upon the earth. v 7, John 1:1-3,14, Matt. 1:18-24 2. The law of God gives testimony of Jesus Christ. v 8, Luke 24:44-48 C. These are the essentials for His testimony. vs 9:10 1. Christians must receive His testimony as it came from God. v 9, Matt. 17:1-8 2. Saints must believe the testimony which God gave concerning Jesus. v 10, Matt. 3:13-17 D. These are the values of His testimony. vs 11-12 1. Christians are promised eternal life. v 11, Romans 2:7 2. This life came from Jesus. v 12, John 10:10

III. THE VALUE OF OUR PRAYERS: VS 13-17

A. These are the characteristics of our prayer. v 13 1. If we believe on the name (the authority) of the Son of God, we will believe in the power of prayers. Luke 18:8 2. If we believe the promise of eternal life, we will believe in the power of prayers. Matt. 7:7-8 B. These are the motivations for our prayers. vs 14-15 1. Christians know that their prayers will be heard. v 14 2. Disciples know that their prayers will be answered. v 15 C. These are the blessings of our prayers. vs 16-17 1. Christians can pray for the lost people of this world while they are living. v 16 2. Saints can not pray for the lost people after they are dead. vs 16-17 a). The sin unto death would be the person who lived and died in sin. b). The sin not unto dead would be the person who lived in sin, but he repented of his sins before he died.

IV. THE NEW BIRTH: VS 18-21

A. These are the effects of that new birth. v 18 1. The Christian does not deliberately practice a life of sin. v 18, Heb. 10:26 2. The disciple keeps himself from a life of sin. v 18, James 4:7 B. These are the blessings of that new birth. v 19 1. Christians are the sons of God by their own regeneration of life. v 19, Gal. 4:4-9 2. Saints are the heirs of God because they have been redeemed by Christ. Romans 8:16-17 C. These are the motivations for that new birth. v 20 1. Christians are given spiritual knowledge in Christ. Col. 2:3 2. Saints are reconciled unto God in Christ. 2 Cor. 5:17-21 3. Disciples are promised eternal life through Christ. Romans 2:7 D. This is the proof of our own birth. v 21 (This is achieved by keeping ourselves from idols.) Col. 3:5

THE BOOK OF 11 JOHN

I. THE INTRODUCTION OF THE LETTER: VS 1-3

A. This letter was from a great Christian: John, the elder. v 1 B. This letter was to the greatest people on earth: The elder lady and her children vs 1 C. This letter came with the greatest credentials: The truth. v 2 D. This letter desired the greatest blessings: Grace, mercy and peace. v 3 E. This letter was from the greatest source: God and Christ. v 3

II. THE COMMANDMENT OF LOVE: VS 4-6

A. These are the proofs of love. v 4 1. A Christians can not prove his love by walking in religious error. Psa. 1:1 2. A Disciple can prove his love by walking in the truth. Psa. 1:2-3 B. These are the reasons for love. v 5 1. Love is a commandment of God. Matt. 22:36-40 2. Love fulfills the laws of God. Romans 13:8-10 C. These are the commandments of love. v 5 1. Christians must love each other. 1 Peter 1:22 2. Saints should love their enemies. Matt. 5:43-45 D. These are the effects of love. v 6 1. Love will help us to keep the commandments of God. III. THE PROBLEM WITH RELIGIOUS ERROR: VS 7-11

IV. THE SALUTATION OF SECOND JOHN: VS 12-13

John wanted all persons to have spiritual joy. C. These are the blessings of the salutation. v 13 (Other Christians are remembering you.)

THE BOOK OF 111 JOHN

I. THE HAPPINESS OF A SOUL WINNER: VS 1-4

A. These are the effects of a soul-winner. v 1 1. Winning souls engenderes true love. James 5:19-20 2. Winning souls can keep our soul from being lost. Ezek. 3:18-21 B. These are the desires of a soul-winner. v 2 1. Christians should hope that other people may prosper in a physical way. James 1:17 2. Saints should be anxious for other Christians to prosper in a spiritual way. Eph. 1:3 C. These are the joys of a soul-winner. vs 3-4 1. Christians should rejoice when they hear of another disciple walking in the truth. v 3, 1 John 1:7-9 2. Saints can rejoice when they hear of another Christian being faithful unto the Lord. v 4, 2 Tim. 4:6-8

II. CHRISTIAN SERVICE: VS 5-8

A. These are the requirements of that service. v 5 1. Christian service should be rendered to each saint. Gal. 6:10 2. Christian service can be rendered to strangers. Heb. 13:1-2 B. These are the effects of that service. v 6 1. Christian service will engender love and friendship. 2. Christian service will please God. C. These are the reasons for that service. v 7 (Those traveling Missionaries were not taking support from the Gentiles.) D. These are the motivations for that service. v 8 1. Christians can support preachers. 2. Disciples can be fellow helpers in the truth.

III. THE LORDSHIP OF DIOTREPHES: VS 9-11

A. These were the traits of his lordship. v 9 1. Diotrephes loved the preeminence among church members. 2. Diotrephes refused to have fellowship with the apostle John. B. This was the rebuke for his lordship. v 10 ("I will remember his deeds which he doeth.") C. These are the effects of his lordship. v 10 1. Diotrephes used vile language against John and his associates. 2. Diotrephes refused to fellowship the brethren which came from John. 3. Diotrephes would not allow the congregation to fellowship the brethren which came from John. 4. Diotrephes expelled members from his congregation when they refused to obey his laws. 5. Diotrephes demanded to be first in power, rule and authority in his congregation. 6. The attitude of Diotrephes is that which help to promote the great apostasy which started in the church during the First Century. Acts 20:28- 30

IV. THE FAITHFULNESS OF DEMETRIUS: VS 11-12

A. These were the reasons for his faithfulness. v 11 1. Demetrius did not pursue evil deeds. 1 Thess. 5:22 2. Demetrius pursued goodness. Gal. 6:10 B. These are the motivations for his faithfulness. v 11 1. If Demetrius did good, he would be of God. Titus 2:11-12 2. If Demetrius did evil, he would not be of God. 1 John 2:15-17 C. These were the extends of his faithfulness. v 12 1. All men praised his faithfulness. Matt. 5:14-16 2. The truth itself praised his faithfulness. 2 Cor. 13:5 D. This is the proof of his faithfulness. v 12 (John testified that Demetrius was faithful.)

V. THE SALUTATION OF THIRD JOHN: VS 13-14

A. This is the fullness of his salutation. v 13 ("John had many things to write.") B. This was the hope of his salutation. v 14 ("John hoped that he could come to see Gaius.") C. This is the greetings of his salutation. v 14 (John want peace for Gaius.)
