0907 baptizw (bap-tid'-zo) from a derivative of 0911, Majority Text: 80 times TDNT - 1:529,92; verb AV - baptize (77), wash 2, baptist 1; 1) to dip under or into, to immerse, to submerge under 2) to wash or bathe by dipping or submerging 3) Figuratively: to be
overwhelmed (Example:
"He is immersed in his work.")
All Bible translations that do not
transliterate
"baptiso" into "baptize" use the word "immerse."
Not to be confused with 0911, bapto. The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptizo (0907) is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words. Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be 'dipped' (bapto) into boiling water and then 'baptised' (baptizo) in the vinegar solution. Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptizing the vegetable, produces a permanent change. (From Bible Study Magazine, James Montgomery Boice, May 1989).
