Studies in II Thessalonians (Chapters 1-2)
Introduction: Written shortly after the first. Paul, Timothy, and Silas are still together verse1 as they were in the first Epistle I Thessalonians 1:1. The time and place is AD 53 from Corinth Paul’s third missionary journey. This Epistle will confirm preparation for the Second Coming of Christ, and will urge them to live right in expectation of that day. Paul will be sure to clarify that the Second Coming is not at hand. As before, they again will be encouraged.
 
I.  Vengeance will come from God II Thessalonians 1:7-8
Vengeance on Persecutor’s of the faithful is in God’s hands not ours.

Deuteronomy 32:35-36, Psalms 94:1-15, and Romans 12:18-21.

       
    II.   The Text – chapters 1-2 of II Thessalonians
       
Chapter ONE

(Verses 1-4) – Paul, Timothy, and Silas were thankful for their faith, love, and patience.

These are the three attributes that will last – I Corinthians 13:1-13

(Verses 5-10) – The fact that vengeance belongs to God of those that are against Christians. The fact that the punishment is everlasting.

The punishment is on those whom do not know God or have not obeyed the Gospel I Peter 4:16-19. How does one know God and obey the Gospel? 

Hearing, believing, and being baptized – Mark 16:15-16.

Hearing and believing leads to obedience – Romans 10:16-21

Obedience of God and not men – Acts 5:29

(Verses 11-12) – Paul, Timothy, and Silas will pray for them.

Chapter TWO

(Verses 1-12) – Correction that the day of the Lord (Second Coming) is NOT at hand v.2. They told them that there is no sign of a falling away into the Second Coming of Christ. 

Those who believe not the truth and obey unrighteousness will be judged Romans 2:1-12, I Corinthians 13:6, and 

II Corinthians 4:2-7.

(Verses 13-16) – Words of exhortation to stand in what they have learned in word, epistle, and deed. The Apostles are examples for us Philippians 3:13-18 and I Timothy 4:12. We are to do things according to the authority of Christ Colossians 3:17

     
    III.   Comfort your Hearts II Thessalonians 2:17
We are to remain comforted in the hope which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. I Timothy 1:1, Titus 2:13, and Hebrews 3:6. Conclusion: Are you in or outside of the body of Christ? There is salvation in none other Acts 4:10-12.
