THE FIVE ACTS OF WORSHIP
THREE TYPES OF WORSHIP
(1) Vain Worship
KJV Matthew 15:9
9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines
the commandments of men.
(2) Ignorant Worship
KJV Acts 17:23
23. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I
found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore
ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
(3) In Spirit and Truth
KJV John 4:21-24
21. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour
cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship
the Father.
22. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship:
for salvation is of the Jews.
23. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers
shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh
such to worship him.
24. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him
in spirit and in truth.
WE CANNOT WORSHIP ACCORDING TO MAN
KJV Matthew 15:2-9
2. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders?
for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
3. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also
transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
4. For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and
mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
5. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or
his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
6. And honour not his father or his mother, he shall
be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your
tradition.
7. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
8. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth,
and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines
the commandments of men.
IF WE DO TRANSGRESS THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST WE HAVE NOT GOD
KJV 2 John 1:9-10
9. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine
of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he
hath both the Father and the Son.
10. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive
him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
PREACHING IN THE WORSHIP
THE APOSTLES PREACHED DURING THE WORSHIP ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE
WEEK
KJV Acts 20:7
7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples
came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart
on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
THE APOSTLES TAUGHT DAILY IN THE TEMPLE AND IN EVERY HOUSE
KJV Acts 5:42
42. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased
not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
WE ARE TO PREACH THE WORD EVERYWHERE
KJV Acts 8:4
4. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where
preaching the word.
WE ARE TO PREACH JESUS
KJV Acts 8:35
35. Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same
scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
THEY TAUGHT AS THEY ASSEMBLED THEMSELVES WITH THE CHURCH
KJV Acts 11:26
26. And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch.
And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the
church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians
first in Antioch.
WE NEED TO TEACH THE WORDS OF OUR LORD
KJV 1 Timothy 6:3
3. If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words,
even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according
to godliness;
PRAYING IN WORSHIP
THEY PRAYED IN THE ASSEMBLY AS THE BROKE BREAD AND TAUGHT
KJV Acts 2:42
42. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine
and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
PETER PRAYED EVEN IN PRISON
KJV Acts 12:5
5. Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made
without ceasing of the church unto God for him.
JESUS TEACHES US HOW TO PRAY
KJV Matthew 6:5-15
5. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites
are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners
of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They
have their reward.
6. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet,
and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret;
and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the
heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father
knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which
art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as
it is in heaven.
11. Give us this day our daily bread.
12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for
ever. Amen.
14. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly
Father will also forgive you:
15. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither
will your Father forgive your trespasses.
WE ARE TO PRAY EVERYWHERE
KJV 1 Timothy 2:8
8. I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting
up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
WE SHOULD PRAY CONTINUALY
KJV 1 Thessalonians 5:17
17. Pray without ceasing.
SINGING AS WORSHIP
WE ARE TO SIMPLY SING
KJV Matthew 26:30
30. And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the
mount of Olives.
TO SING WITH THE UNDERSTANDING
KJV 1 Corinthians 14:15
15. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and
I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and
I will sing with the understanding also.
WE ARE TO SPEAK IN SONG, NOT PLAY
KJV Ephesians 5:19
19. Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
WE ARE TO TEACH IN SONGS
KJV Colossians 3:16
16. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching
and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
THE LORD’S SUPPER IN WORSHIP
WE ARE TO PARTAKE OF UNLEAVENED BREAD, AND FRUIT OF THE VINE IN
REMEMBRANCE OF CHRIST
KJV Matthew 26:17-30
17. Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread
the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare
for thee to eat the passover?
18. And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and
say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover
at thy house with my disciples.
19. And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them;
and they made ready the passover.
20. Now when the even was come, he sat down with the
twelve.
21. And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto
you, that one of you shall betray me.
22. And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every
one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
23. And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand
with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.
24. The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but
woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good
for that man if he had not been born.
25. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said,
Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.
26. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed
it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this
is my body.
27. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it
to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28. For this is my blood of the new testament, which
is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth
of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you
in my Father's kingdom.
30. And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into
the mount of Olives.
ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK
KJV Acts 20:7
7. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples
came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart
on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
PAUL RESTATES CHRIST’ INSTITUTION
KJV 1 Corinthians 11:23-29
23. For I have received of the Lord that which also
I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was
betrayed took bread:
24. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said,
Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance
of me.
25. After the same manner also he took the cup, when
he
had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do
ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
26. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this
cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
27. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink
this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood
of the Lord.
28. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat
of that bread, and drink of that cup.
29. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh
damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
CONTRIBUTION IN THE WORSHIP SERVICE
WE ARE TO CONTRIBUTE ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK
KJV 1 Corinthians 16:1-2
1. Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have
given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
2. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you
lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings
when I come.
WE ARE TO GIVE OF OUR OWN SELVES FIRST
KJV 2 Corinthians 8:1-5
1. Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace
of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;
2. How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance
of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.
3. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond
their power they were willing of themselves;
4. Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive
the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
5. And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave
their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.
GIVE AS PURPOSED IN OUR HEARTS
KJV 2 Corinthians 9:6-9
6. But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap
also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
7. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart,
so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful
giver.
8. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you;
that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every
good work:
9. (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath
given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.
